Seven members of the Yukon Orienteering Association competed at the Golden Leaf Orienteering Festival, near Hamilton, Ontario earlier this month.
The event encompassed the biannual North American Orienteering Championships, and was attended by a strong field of American and Canadian orienteers.
The sprint championship was held on the McMaster University campus in west Hamilton on the Friday. Courses are short and winning times should be in the range of 12 to 15 minutes.
Twelve-year-old Dahria Beatty, competing outside of the territory for the second time, finished her course in only seven minutes and five seconds, easily winning the F13-14 category.
Not only did Dahria “run up” against older competitors, she was the second fastest on her course.
In the very deep fields of elite men and women, Brent Langbakk finished eighth; Pam James was fourth and Justine Scheck 15th.
Other Yukon results in the sprint were a sixth-place finish by Barbara Scheck in the F45-55 category, a fourth-place by Ross Burnett running in M35-45, and Philippa McNeil first in the open category.
Yukon results for the middle distance race were as follows: in the elite women, Pam James posted a super result of fourth of 28 competitors. In elite men, Ross Burnett was 28th and Brent Langbakk 43rd in the large field of nearly 70 men.
Dahria Beatty was second in F13-14, Barbara Scheck finished sixth in the F45-55 category and Philippa McNeil again mastered the open category.
The third day was the North American Long Distance race. Once more the Yukon group came up with some good strong results with two top three finishes.
Dahria Beatty earned her second gold medal of the competition and firmly showed her mastery of the F13-14 category. In the elite women, Pam James received the silver medal for her excellent race.
In the elite men, Brent Langbakk came up with an eighth-place finish. Ross Burnett finished sixth in the M35-45 category, and Philippa McNeil was second in the open category.

Stellar goaltending and a never-say die-spirit kept the Molars in this one. Laurie Malo, Jim Baker and Rob Twa scored for the Molars, and Bill Bohmer and Rick Blaker scored for the Flames.

Mark Pike netted two for the Turbos, as they thumped the Rangers on Wednesday. Jerry Wald scored one and assisted on three, and Glen Heinbigner, Rob Miller and Blaine Demchuk added goals as well.
Phil Borgel scored the Rangers lone goal.

Chris Torgerson scored six times for Brouwer, and Sam Wintemute added the seventh goal. Austin Bourque was named top player.
Coates’ scorers were Riley Smoler, with two, Kyle Jacobs and Brayden Klassen. Hannah Milner was the MVP.

Tim Hortons’ MVP Luka Van Randen led the way with a hat trick, Dustin Muklosky scored a pair, and Christian Oumet added one.
Josh Larouche netted two for Better Bodies, and Isaac Fairman and Elias Sagar scored as well. Megan Banks was named top player.

Stephen Dynes booted in seven goals for the Copiers; Michael Hemmings added a hat trick and Ross Mitcham Timpany added a single. Scott Dupont took MVP honours.
Robin Smith scored twice for EBA, while Brianne Levia, Travis Olynyk, Riley Smith and Kellie Brown added singles. Erica Trimble was EBA’s player of the game.

Tyler Pumphrey couldn’t stop scoring in this game, netting seven goals for the Plumbers. Michael Donohoe added four, and Josh Scheffen scored one. Mauricio Ruiz was named MVP.
Nick Gillen scored two for The Electrical Shop, and Dillon Vickerman and MVP Michael Abbott added singles.
