Despite a pair of one-goal leads by Eagle Construction early on, Wintemute Electric had enough juice to pull off an 8-4 win over the Eagles in U-13 Whitehorse Minor Soccer on Wednesday at the Canada Games Centre.
“The team overall is doing really well this year,” said Wintemute coach Lorne Harris. “They’re helping each other out, they’re passing well, supporting each other. They’re a good unit.”
Tied 2-2, Wintemute’s Samantha Wintemute scored her second of the game, giving her team their first lead of the game and starting off a four-goal spree to go up 6-2. For her goals and her overall play, she was named her team’s MVP.
“She played really well,” said Harris. “She was passing well and checking well. Jenelle (Cousins, who scored the eventual game-winner) did really well too and Zach (Endress) got his first goal of the season, so that was a milestone for him.”
Also scoring for Wintemute were Ehsan Idrees with two, and Syed with one.
“They came together as a team, they were passing well, playing their positions well,” said Harris. “They started hustling and it really paid off.”
Eagle’s Elias Sager, who was named his team’s MVP with two goals, opened the scoring before teammates Benjamin Grundmanis and Liam Dinn also found the back of the net.
“He made a lot of good plays, went to openings real well, waiting for the ball to come to him, and got some nice goals out of it,” said Eagle coach Peter Grundmanis of Sager. “He had good hustle throughout the game.”
