Team Red didn’t have the best attendance record over the season, but they had just enough players when it counted.

The Red squad took first in Volleyball Yukon’s Co-ed Reverse 4’s League on Wednesday at F.H. Collins Secondary School.

Only four of the team’s six players showed up, but four was all they needed. They just didn’t have any subs.

“When we had good attendance we played pretty well, but we barely had good attendance so we were kind of the last place team all through the season,” said Red’s Adam Waddington. “It was an underdog story.”

The Red team, which included Albert Spycher, Emma Hayes and Jessica Signoretti, took first in the new six-week, six-team league with a 25-13, 17-25, 15-10 win over Team Purple in the final.

Red advanced through one-set quarter and semifinals before the best of three match to determine league champs.

“In the first set we thought we had it, we were celebrating,” said Waddington of the final. “The second set came around and we were a little shaky, a little tired - we played three games and that was our third. I think we just needed to focus a little more.”

Playing for Purple were Adam Robinson, Bryce Voogd, Daniel Moses, Tonya White and Monica Kurz.

In the league each team must have two males and two females on the court during play. The rules dictate that males can only attack (spike the ball) from behind the attack line (the three-metre line) and cannot block attacks from females. Female players can attack from anywhere on the court and can block attacks from anyone.

“It’s a fun league,” said Waddington. “It was awesome, a good time and I’d do it again in a heartbeat.”
