Soapbox sledding derby held during Whitehorse ski clubs Nordic fest

The Spring Nordic Festival’s soapbox derby attracted participants with quirky, creative sleds

Revellers gathered at the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club’s chalet on March 17 to participate in the club’s Spring Nordic Festival. The festivities ran from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

A soapbox sledding derby was held during the festival, attracting more than half a dozen participants with unique, home-built sleds. The soapbox derby started shortly after 3 p.m., with Yukon NDP leader Kate White directing and announcing racers on the microphone.

In addition to the sled races, the ski club’s Spring Nordic Festival also included a relay race, snowshoe tour, kicksledding and curling.

There was also live music, food and a beer garden for attendees to enjoy from noon to 4 p.m.
