Office Supply Centre wasn’t about to let a long string of wins come to an end over the weekend – especially not at the most crucial point of the season.
Office Supply added three more wins on the pile to complete an undefeated season and win the under-12 division at Softball Yukon’s minor league championship on Saturday at the Pepsi Softball Centre.
“We had a pretty good group of kids,” said Supply Centre coach Michael Tuton. “The less strong kids played really well down the stretch and I think it was our pitching that got us going. We picked four guys who were interested at the beginning of the year and worked with them every day – worked on delivery – and we were the only team that every pitcher windmilled, accept for maybe one.
“And we worked on simple defence every day – catching a simple grounder and getting the outs when they give them to us.”
Office Supply, who had one tie during the season, took the title with a 10-3 win over EMCO in the final.
They broke the game open in the third inning when Nevaeh Webb brought in three runs on a double to make it 7-1.
“Not all of them played baseball before, but they’re all athletic. So they’re easy to work with, easy to get going,” said Tuton. “A bunch are hockey players who never played before and wanted to come try it out this year.”
P&M Recycling also capped the season with three straight wins in the under-14 division.
The recycling squad downed Dave’s Cleaning Crew 17-10 for the title.
“I’d say we were both evenly matched teams going in, anyone could have taken it, and we were fortunate enough to capitalize,” said P&M coach Craig Dempsey. “We got some early runs out of the gate and away we went.”
P&M took an early lead with seven runs in the second inning and six in the third. Things just went their way, as demonstrated by catcher Naoise Dempsey making a behind-the-back catch on a foul ball – considered by most as the play of the game.
“Jayden Hardy, he threw outstanding, as did Huss Breithaupt,” said Craig. “They were our go-to pitchers and they did fantastic.”
