In loving memory ~
It is with deep sorrow and grief that we announce the passing of beloved White River First Nation Elder and Matriarch Gàan Dànihtl'˛io˛ Marilyn John. After a 20-year battle with cancer, Marilyn passed away peacefully in her sleep in Whitehorse, Yukon.
She was a tough Scottie Creek woman and Survivor of Lower Post residential school. Marilyn was born hard-headed, free-spirited, and extremely protective. She always spoke up against injustice and stood up for herself and others. She taught her children and grandchildren to do the same. Marilyn lived throughout Yukon, Alaska, and Alberta but called Beaver Creek, Yukon home.
She is survived by her children Rosemarie (Greg), Janet (Dwayne), Sid "Tuffy" (Jane), and John (Jocelyn); her ex-husband and best friend Sid van der Meer; as well as her grandchildren Jordan (Trinda), Teresa, Nevada "Deuce", and Quanah. Marilyn was also gifted with three beautiful great-grandchildren Paisey, Sophia, and Zayden.
The family would like to thank the Beaver Creek Health Centre, Thompson Centre, and Whistle Bend Continuing Care Facility for their support throughout the years and for making Marilyn's last few months as peaceful as possible.
