Hazel was born in St. John's, Newfoundland to Norman and Lillian Downey (nee Piercey), raised with her seven siblings on New Gower Street above the family owned grocery store. NJ Downey Grocery was renown for having speciality products relevant to the Newfoundland cuisine of the day. Upon closing the grocery store, Norman and Lillian retired and moved into the Green family home, where Hazel cared for her parents until their passing.
At the encouragement of her sister, Sandra White, the Green family moved from Newfoundland to Whitehorse, Yukon in June of 1993. While Hazel left Newfoundland, Newfoundland never left Hazel. She returned annually to her family on the rock spending precious time making new memories.
To her friends Hazel personified love, compassion and acceptance. Her infectious laugh, beautiful smile, and warm embrace greeted every person who entered her home, of whom there were many.
Hazel contributed to her community, volunteering for the Learning Disabilities Association of Yukon, Yukon Anti-Poverty Coalition, Yukon Agriculture Society, Kaushee's Place and Child Development Centre and dedicated many hours baking, cooking and delivering food to Yukon Seniors at Christmas time. The Green family's Christmas eve open house was an annual highlight for her friends and community for many years.
Hazel dedicated many years raising her beautiful grandchildren, and was the neighbourhood grandmother to many. She spent hours teaching children art, baking, and singing. Hazel dedicated her life to her family and her community, surrounding them all with so much love and happiness.
She will forever be missed and loved by all who were lucky enough to have known her.
The Green family would like to say a special thank you to Dr. Carew, Dr. Passmore and Dr. Quong. We would also like to sincerely acknowledge the exceptional staff at Whistlebend Place whom there are too many to mention. The love and care provided by staff to Hazel was above and beyond the call of duty. We will be forever grateful for you all.
Donations in her memory can be made to The Yukon Foundation (George Green Legacy Fund) or the Alzheimer Society of Canada.
A Celebration of life for Hazel is planned for June 2021 in Whitehorse, Yukon.
