Elfriede "Frieda" Vavra (nee Orthmeier)

January 6, 2018

It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Elfriede Vavra (nee Orthmeier).

Elfriede (Freida) was born in Berlin, Germany and moved to Edmonton in 1956. There she married George Vavra, an immigrant from Czechoslovakia. In 1960 she moved with her children to Whitehorse, Yukon. She enjoyed nature and her favourite pastime was picking berries in the bush country.

In Whitehorse she found employment at the Whitehorse General Hospital where she made many friends and worked for over 25 years. She also met her partner, Fred Hartt, in Whitehorse, with whom she spent many happy decades until his death. Upon retirement, Freida moved to Calgary to be near to her children and grandchildren.

She is survived by daughter Shirley (son-in-law Terry) and son Jim (daughter-in-law Phyllis) as well as her 4 grandchildren (Rebecca, Brittany, Alison, Scott).

The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and aides at the Rockyview Hospital and Chartwell Eau Claire Retirement Residence who helped care for her.

In lieu of flowers memorial tributes may be made directly to the Alzheimer Society Alberta at http://alzheimer.ca/en/ab/Get-involved/Ways-to-donate.
