Whitehorse weightlifter Jeane Lassen has won a gold medal for Canada at the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia.
On Monday, Lassen set a new Games record with a 132-kilogram clean and jerk, and snatched 97 kilograms.
Her combined weight of 229 kilograms put her in first place in the 69-kilogram class.
Emily Quarton, also of Whitehorse, took silver in the 58-kilogram class on Saturday. She clean and jerked 101 kilograms and snatched 77, for a total of 178 kilograms.
The Canadian women’s weightlifting team has won six medals so far; two gold, three silver and a bronze.
In other Commonwealth Games news, Yukoner Zach Bell set a new Canadian track cycling record on Thursday in the 4,000-metre men’s individual pursuit. His time of 4:31.831 broke a 12-year old record set by Brian Walton in Palermo, Italy.
Bell’s time was good for a ninth-place finish at the Games.
