The Whitehorse RCMP has alerted the public that an incident its officers responded to led to a hold-and-secure situation at Whitehorse Elementary. Information released the day after the the incident suggests a false alarm.

Per social media posts issued by the RCMP at approximately 4 p.m. on March 25, police responded to an incident at the intersection of Fourth Avenue and Alexander Street in downtown Whitehorse earlier on the afternoon of March 25. A March 26 notice from the RCMP states that police were called to the area about a person possibly carrying a weapon at about 3:20 p.m. on March 25.

The intersection is about two blocks from the school.

The school was temporarily put in a hold-and-secure posture, which the police notice states is used in response to emergencies that are outside and unrelated to the school. The hold-and-secure measure is described as a “precaution” in this case.

The police notice issued March 26 states that their investigation is ongoing but officers believe that the item the initial caller reported as a weapon was not in fact a weapon and was not being used in a threatening manner. No arrests were made.
