The Whitehorse Urban Cycling Coalition (WUCC) and the Klondike Snowmobile Association (KSA) have pitched the city a solution for the maintenance of the trail alongside Hamilton Boulevard that will meet both groups’ needs this winter.

“Given last winter’s demonstrated success of the snow packed surface on the Airport Trail, Range Road Trail, and Lower Escarpment Trail, WUCC and KSA are pleased to announce they have developed an interim winter maintenance proposal that will make the Hamilton Boulevard Trail more usable by a broader spectrum of people, including winter cyclists and snow machines,” a Jan. 17 notice to the media reads.

“Although not an ideal solution for either set of users, we believe this can be a workable interim solution that will allow users to accommodate each other until such time as the separated infrastructure is developed by the city.”

The proposal to the city calls for the trail to be cleared to a hard-packed snow surface without the application of grit. Examples of trails maintained like this already are: the Lower Escarpment Trail, the Airport Trail and Range Road/Alaska Highway Trail. The requested surface is considered excellent for winter cycling and usable by snowmobiles.

The notice states that the solution has been delivered to the city. The groups say that the city has the capability to do the maintenance as requested.
