Citizens helped put out a small forest fire near the Takhini Hot Springs Wednesday.

Smoke was spotted on the Takhini River Road just before 9 p.m., and members of the public fought the fire before officials arrived.

“Because of the quick response times from the Hootalinqua Fire Department and Wildland Fire Management, as well as the notification and help from the public, the fire was caught and quickly extinguished,” said Duty Officer Jim Kathrein.

The fire was human-caused, but the exact source is not known.

Two lightning fires ignited in the Watson Lake district Wednesday as well, although officials say that no properties are in immediate danger.

The fire danger rating for Watson Lake is still extreme, and more lightning strikes are expected.

Wildland Fire Management has urged the public to exercise caution when burning and to report any suspicious smoke.
