The Skagway Pass on the South Klondike Highway continues to be only open during daylight hours due to avalanche risk.

Strong winds hampered plans to conduct avalanche control after an avalanche closed the road on Sunday.

That usually means lobbing explosives out of a helicopter to release snowpack near areas that are prone to avalanches.

Until that preventive work is completed, that section of the highway, between Carcross and Skagway, will remain when it’s dark.

“That’s to protect the safety of our workers and the travelling public,” said Mickey Parkin, the territory’s western area supervisor of highways.

The Department of Highways and Public Works received a report of the avalanche on Jan. 8 around 10 a.m., said Parkin.

Road crews later cleared snow from approximately 75 metres of road, at Kilometre 79.5, near Mount Racine, said Parkin. The road was cleared that afternoon, but the highway has been closed every evening since for fear of a repeat. The avalanche potential is rated as “high.”
