Schoolyard attack

Officials have dealt with an incident in Carmacks this week that saw an 11-year old girl taken to hospital after she was allegedly choked on the schoolyard.

“I know that the students have been talked to by the principal,” said regional superintendent Greg Storey. “He is satisfied with having got to the bottom of it and has followed their behaviour policy, and feels that he has a handle on the situation.”

The girl was playing outside at lunch break when the incident happened.

It appears some kids had pulled up the girl’s hoodie and were dragging her around by the shirt, said Storey.

“One of the other students noticed something dangerous was happening and went and talked to one of the teachers on duty,” he said.

The girl was taken to the nursing station and her parent was called.

“As a precaution, she was brought to Whitehorse for observation just to make sure everything was OK,” said Storey. “She’s back in school now, and according to the father, is fine.”
