Yukon College will continue to offer training for people looking to become oil burner mechanics.
The Yukon government announced this week it’s giving the college $116,762 to help pay for up to 24 spots at the school.
Courses offering various levels of training are run out of Yukon College.
That includes training for people who have no experience, training for those who are already registered as apprentices and those who have been working in the field.
Certified plumbers with at least 3,600 hours of experience in the oil burner mechanic trade can complete an approved upgrading course to challenge the interprovincial exam.
Alternately, tradespeople with at least 8,100 hours of experience in the oil burner mechanic trade can challenge the interprovincial exam without having to complete the course.
In 2013, legislation in the Yukon was changed to require that all installations and modifications of furnaces be done by a certified oil-burner mechanic.
The law was changed after five people died of carbon monoxide poisoning in 2012 inside a house in Porter Creek. (Ashley Joannou)
