A Vancouver company has bought two large plots of land in downtown Whitehorse amidst rumours of a new grocery store coming to town.
Jim Pattison Developments Ltd. took over the two lots near the current Home Hardware on Dec. 18 according to documents filed with the Yukon land titles office.
The larger lot is 1.43 hectares. The company also bought the 0.548 hectare lot next to it. The land is valued at $5.2 million total. The land documents do not say how much the property was sold for.
The Jim Pattison Group is the second largest private company in Canada. It has divisions that include the automotive industry, advertising, media, food and beverage, entertainment and real estate.
Rumours have been swirling for some time that a new grocery store was coming to Whitehorse. The Jim Pattison Group has been in the food and beverage industry since 1968. It owns nearly a dozen brands of grocery stores including PriceSmart Foods, Overwaitea Foods and Save-On-Foods.
The company has not returned phone calls about its plans for the property.
So far no building permits for the land have been requested from the city.
