Old Crow’s Liberal MLA, Darius Elias, wants to square off in a debate against his opponent, the Yukon Party’s Gary Njootli.

But Njootli says it isn’t necessary.

“(A) forum is not going to change people’s minds. They have it set on Yukon Party,” Njootli wrote to Elias via Facebook. “They’re going to vote for me regardless.”

Elias proposed the debate after hearing Njootli had made comments about the community of Old Crow being broken.

“People want change, they had a taste of the Liberal government, now they want someone in with the majority government,” Njootli wrote.

“Know (sic) offense but people want majority government not 3rd party government.”

“Instead of running away and hiding, Mr. Njootli should be willing to stand in front of the community and defend his statements,” said Elias in a news release Thursday.

Njootli told CHON FM yesterday that he was unable to debate Elias next week because of a broken tooth that had to be fixed in Whitehorse.

Njootli was unavailable at press time. “He was boating up the Crow River,” said Yukon Party campaign manager Jonas Smith.
