First a crack house, and now this.
A Habitat for Humanity triplex at 810 Wheeler Street will choke the neighbourhood with car traffic and “dust,” said two Wheeler residents to city council on Monday night.
The triplex’s alley-side parking could endanger children playing in the adjacent park, said Wheeler resident Heather Kennedy, saying she represents the opinions of “everyone” on the street.
Should children decide to play in the alley, they could be run over.
“I’m sorry that there aren’t more people here from our community,” she said, gesturing to a mostly empty council chamber.
“No kid’s going to run around in the back alley and play in the mud,” said Todd Hardy, president of Habitat for Humanity Yukon.
“Because the alley is unpaved, the dust is quite a problem in the summertime,” added another Wheeler resident.
“I’ve got a back alley exactly the same, and there’s no dust,” said Hardy, who lives three blocks away from the proposed triplex site.
“I understand the concerns, but I don’t think they’re justified, and they’re not giving us a fair opportunity,” he said.
Despite vehement opposition to traffic, Kennedy likes the project, she said.
