Dawson City resident Mark McDiarmid didn’t show up to court on Monday for the first day of his jury trial in Yukon Supreme Court.
McDiarmid is charged with assaulting and threatening lawyer Jennifer Cunningham and RCMP Cpl. Stephen Knaack in February 2014 in Whitehorse court.
Potential jurors filled three courtrooms at the Whitehorse courthouse Monday.
The day was supposed to start with jury selection but because of McDiarmird’s absence the potential jurors were sent home.
A warrant was issued for McDiarmid’s arrest.
It’s not clear whether he will be able to proceed with a jury trial once he resurfaces.
“The court noted that in some cases a person who fails to attend can lose their right to a jury, unless they can show a good reason for missing court,” Crown prosecutor David McWhinnie told the News on Tuesday.
