A Whitehorse man is dead and a second man is charged with impaired driving after a snowmobile crash north of Carcross.

Shannon Meawasige died Friday after the single vehicle crash near kilometre 114 of the South Klondike Highway.

Carcross RCMP detachment commander Geoff Peters said Meawasige and a friend were riding near the edge of a forested area when they attempted to enter a ditch.

Peters said it appears they were trying to cross the road.

The snowmobile flipped and ended up five or six feet down into the ditch, he said.

Meawasige, who is 38-years-old and from Whitehorse, was pronounced dead shortly after EMS arrived at the scene.

Police say the driver, Wayne Noseworthy, suffered minor injuries. He was taken to Whitehorse General Hospital and later released. The 35-year-old from Carcross has been charged with impaired driving causing death.
