The City of Whitehorse’s recently completed lock-block wall halted a “small” landslide on the escarpment along Robert Service Way.

The wall appears to have prevented debris from crossing the road when it slid on May 4, according to a photo in the city’s latest online escarpment update.

The south access route in and out of downtown Whitehorse remains open.

The slide occurred in an area under active monitoring due to it being a concern, per the update.

The update notes the barrier was just finished earlier this week in response to indicators from the slope scanner and the monitoring program.

As of March 20, a slope scanner has been deployed to monitor movement on the escarpment in real-time.

On April 25, the escarpment experienced a minor slide of less than 100 cubic metres.

The latest slides follow a series of slides in 2022 and 2023 that periodically shut down the road.

Crews continue to monitor the slope and road users are asked to use caution as conditions can quickly change, as noted in the update.
