Steven Fletcher, Canada’s minister of state for transport, visited Whitehorse Thursday afternoon to discuss long-term infrastructure plans with territorial bigwigs.
But there was little to announce beyond this at a news conference staged that day with Elaine Taylor, the Yukon’s minister of Community Services.
Canada’s current plan, Building Canada, was introduced in 2007. The $33-billion plan expires in 2014.
MP Ryan Leef, Fletcher and Taylor all said the meetings reinforced the need for different levels of government to work together as the territory continues to grow.
In the Yukon, Building Canada funds have been used to improve drinking water, waste-water systems, rural roads and green energy, said Taylor.
The Yukon has many “shovel-ready” projects, said Taylor. Water and sewage improvements for Watson Lake are the one example she provided.
While here, Fletcher will tour the territory with stops in Carcross and Dawson City.
