Frank Zappa’s band the Grande Mothers Re:Invented were denied access at the border and Friday’s show at the Yukon Arts Centre has been cancelled!

Music through the looking glass

Follow Alice down the rabbit hole with the Yukon’s Longest Night Ensemble and special guests. The musical score is directed by Daniel Janke and will be accompanied by excerpts from Jan Svankmajer’s film Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. The show is at the Yukon Arts Centre on March 11, at 8 p.m.

Jazz it up

The Morgan Childs Quintet is coming to the Yukon Arts Centre on Sunday, March 7th for Jazz on the Wing. The hard-bop quintet of drummer Morgan Childs explores an obscure bop repertoire that recalls the great quintets of the ‘50s and ‘60s. The show starts at 7:30 p.m.

Strumming and sweets

The Whitehorse Folk Society is holding a coffee house on Saturday night. The open-mike sign-up is at 7 p.m. and the delicious carrot cake goes fast, so come early. The music begins at 7:30 p.m.

WORKSHOPS

Yearning for mukluks

If you have a kid and want to make mukluks, head to Skookum Jim Friendship Centre from March 12 through 14 for a canvas-top mukluks workshop. The weekend seminar is for parents with youth or children interested in sharing time together and making shoes. The workshop is free, and lunch and snacks are provided. Fibre arts

The Northern Fibres Guild exhibition opens Friday from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Arts Underground. The show is called From the Eye to the Hand. There will be 11 different artists/disciplines featured. In conjunction with their exhibition the Northern Fibres Guild members will be offering demonstrations at Arts Underground every Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m.

SPORTS

Guns and Hoses

The Whitehorse RCMP are taking on the city’s fire department in a Battle of the Badges hockey games at Takhini Arena on March 14th. The event is a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society and there will be door prizes, a silent auction and signed NHL and Olympic jerseys. The game is from 4:15 p.m. to 7 p.m. and tickets are $5.

Get waxing

The Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club is holding its 27th annual loppet on Saturday, March 6th. There are 138 skiers registered in a host of races including the 3-kilometre, the 7.5-kilometre, the 20-kilometre and the 30-kilometre. Watch the mass start at the Mt. McIntyre ski club at 11 a.m. A post loppet luncheon will follow.

Arctic Games

The Yukon’s best winter atheletes are heading to Grande Prairie, Alberta all next week to represent the territory at the Arctic Winter Games. Follow full coverage in the print and online editions of the Yukon News.

VISUAL ART

Potted party

Head to the Copper Moon Gallery in McCrae this Friday for the opening of Out of Hand. The show features new ceramic works by Yukon potter Larry DuGuay, and the reception is from 5 to 9 p.m. The show runs until March 31st.

Women’s work

A collection of works by local French or French-loving women artists make up the Women and Water exhibit at the Association franco-yukonnaise that runs until early April.

EVENTS

Women unite

Monday is the 100th international Women’s Day, and there are food and activities at the Association franco-yukonnaise all weekend. On Saturday, lunch is a noon, followed by a Women of Wisdom worksh op. There’s crafts at 2 p.m. and a potluck and entertainment that starts at 5 p.m. Sunday follows a similar schedule and Monday, at 6 p.m. there’s a World March of Women event, movies and snacks.

Walk a dog

Head over to the Mae Bachur Animal Shelter and walk some of the pooches waiting in cages for permanent homes. They love to go outside and get some loving.
