Edelweiss grounded

Edelweiss has cancelled direct flights to Whitehorse and Anchorage less than a year after starting them.

Tourism Industry Association chair Neil Hartling learned this in late August.

“It’s always disappointing to see air carriers depart,” he said.

“I can only guess it probably had to do with numbers. If they were making anywhere close to the targets that they had projected they would still be operating.”

The air carrier will still advertise the Yukon to Europeans via indirect flights.

Edelweiss has relationships with both Air Canada and Air North, allowing the company to offer discounted tickets to passengers flying through Vancouver.

“Direct is always the first choice, but if they can come through our local airline that’s still very good,” said Hartling.

Edelweiss Air did not return calls before press time.
