A Dawson City resident was sentenced on Aug. 20 to house arrest for 90 days for careless use of a firearm, contrary to the Wildlife Act.
The individual must respect a 9 p.m. to 8 a.m. curfew, is prohibited from leaving the territory, is restricted from drinking or possessing alcohol, and must report to a sentence supervisor as directed.
The charges stem from an incident in July 2012 when the individual was caught shooting a moose from inside a vehicle on the Dempster Highway. Not only was the moose hunting season not open yet, but the individual was prohibited from hunting due to previous offences in 2009.
The person had also asked the Tr’ondek Hwech’in for permission to let a friend hunt in the area, but the First Nation denied the request.
The offender has also been prohibited from hunting with a friend, obtaining a hunting licence, and possessing a firearm for five years. The person must complete a Hunter Education and Ethics Development course before being approved again for a hunting licence.
