City awards contract for carpooling program

The City of Whitehorse’s new carpooling initiative is one step closer to reality.

The City of Whitehorse’s new carpooling initiative is one step closer to reality.

The contract to design a website that will allow commuters to connect with each other based on where they live and want to go has been awarded to RideShark.

The Ottawa-based company has also set up carpooling websites for the cities of Edmonton and Ottawa.

The new initiative is part of Whitehorse’s transportation demand management plan, which the City adopted in 2014.

One of the goals is to reduce the number of people who drive themselves to work from the current 75 per cent to 50 per cent in the next 25 years.

The program, which should begin by the end of the spring, will be available to all Yukoners.
