Blown fuse to blame for lost phone service

Cellphone and long distance telephone service across southern Yukon were disrupted on Wednesday afternoon due to a blown fuse, says NorthwesTel.

Cellphone and long distance telephone service across southern Yukon were disrupted on Wednesday afternoon due to a blown fuse, says NorthwesTel.

The outage began at noon and lasted until about 1:20 p.m.

A 600-amp fuse was blown, said NorthwesTel’s spokesman, Eric Clement. Due to the size of the electrical piece, as big as one-litre bottle, it took some time before it could come back online.

“Where we saw a delay was that once the issue had been identified, and because of the safety concerns surrounding an electrical piece of that size, appropriate engineers must be on the scene,” said Clement.
