The highway route from the Yukon to Skagway is closed due to an avalanche.

A notice posted by the Yukon Department of Highways and Public Works at about 11 a.m. on March 14 states that an avalanche closed the South Klondike Highway between Carcross and the Fraser Border. It also notes that the highway on the Alaskan side remains closed due to weather conditions between Skagway and the international border.

The post on the Highways and Public Works departments’ Facebook page states that highway crews are assessing the avalanche situation.

An earlier post stated that there was to be a scheduled overnight closure beginning at 6 p.m. yesterday due to elevated avalanche risk amid a storm coming in from the coast.

A Highways and Public Works representative said they could not provide an estimated time of reopening, but suggested travellers could keep an eye on the department’s Facebook page and on 511 Yukon road reports for more information.

In addition to the South Klondike Highway closure, the Haines Road is under a travel advisory due to unfavourable winter conditions.
