Yukoners, what can I say? You’ve done it again.

Together as a community we raised $6,600 for the Terry Fox Foundation through the 2012 Whitehorse run.

The generosity of this year’s participants was incredible and no doubt something Terry would have been proud of. Terry’s mission, when he began the Marathon of Hope, was for each Canadian to donate a dollar. On Sunday the average donation per participant was $37. That is a phenomenal statistic and a testament to the effort of the volunteers, the sponsors and the participants.

A number of thanks are in order:

To Yukon Olympian Zach Bell for being able to speak, honour Terry and motivate and inspire. It was nice to see one role model honour another.

To Adam Thompson for taking time out of his schedule, once again, to ensure everyone was warmed up properly.

To the City of Whitehorse staff for being so hospitable and setting up the tents and tables.

To musician Kim Beggs for providing such lovely entertainment before and after the run.

To the stellar barbecue crew for cooking up the delicious M&M burgers, and Starbucks for the hot coffee, and Northland Beverages for the water.

To Skookum Asphalt for the generous donation that made the event the success it was.

To my team of volunteers: You guys are the cog of this incredible event, and I can’t thank you enough. And especially thanks to you, the participant, for opening up your wallet, lacing up your runners and rollerblades, hopping on your bike and celebrating Terry Fox and his incredible legacy.

Be proud knowing the Yukon is a big part of the more than $600 million that has been raised since the annual Terry Fox Run began 32 years ago and know that 84 cents of every dollar raised goes directly to funding cancer research. Thank you so much and we will see you next year!
