The recent rush of retirement notices issued by a growing number of Yukon cabinet ministers, including the head man himself, suggests that something of great importance to the people of Yukon is in the wind. Reminiscent of a sinking ship, this rapid series of public announcements leads to a wide range of questions and speculation. Residents are certainly entitled to know the reasons why.
Ministers are privy to information long before the public, so could this mean that members of cabinet may have been advised that a forensic audit or independent judicial investigation may be forthcoming? Following seven years of well concealed control over government affairs from the background, is the minister of Community Services now about to lose his firm grip on power?
And equally important, are the past activities of his government about to be revealed to an extent that unsuspecting Yukon Party supporters will now be left to sanitize the remains of his administration?
Whatever occurs in the days ahead, it will be interesting to learn the answers to these and many more questions, particularly with an important election on the horizon.
