Re: Laments of a ‘semi-skilled labour’ (The News, Jan. 2)
I read Doug Sack’s article after the historic bulldozer photo attracted my attention. I do concur with the fact that catskinners and grader operators should deserve a better occupational label than semi-skilled if that indeed is what the end result of his driver’s licence application was.
In his last paragraph he noted and made a pitch for a monument to the catskinners to be placed downtown so that we all can see such a memento of an honest skill/trade.
That in turn made me wonder why in heaven’s name the workers’ compensation building bureaucrats removed the small caterpillar that was donated as a form of art by the late Gunnar Neilson, in favour of an electronic billboard that spews out useless information.
Perhaps, to paraphrase Doug Sack’s comment, maybe the semi-skilled government employees can give that some thought during their coffee break.
