Open letter to Yukon MP Ryan Leef:
I am writing to protest against your government’s cuts to Environment Canada.
The protection of the environment must the single most important issue on everyone’s agenda if our planet and humanity are to survive.
It is utterly unconscionable for you to cut funding and jobs in Environment Canada.
Without adequate monitoring of the environment, it is impossible to know the health of the environment.
I can only suspect that the intent of the cuts is to remove any knowledge of environmental damage being wrought by your other policies. Your party’s thinking appears to be, “If we don’t know what’s wrong and the public is in the dark, we can do what we want to keep power and make money for our friends in business!”
Your photo on your home page shows you against a backdrop of the beautiful Yukon wilderness. I hope that you are not hypocritical enough to remain silent on the cuts to the department, which will contribute to the destruction of the very beauty you are using on your website. When you were elected, you promised to be responsive to the concerns of people in your constituency. I believe if you asked most Yukoners you would find they are appalled Ottawa is eliminating jobs in environmental monitoring and protection.
I trust we will see media reports of you speaking out against these cuts.
