This is a letter to all of you impatient drivers out there.

The big yellow L on the back of my car window is for learner’s - that’s right, someone in that car is learning to drive!

My son has his learner’s licence and is learning to drive around the streets of Whitehorse. This is nerve-racking enough to be behind the wheel of a vehicle, trying to practise and get in the hours to feel comfortable. But you impatient drivers out there are not helping matters.

What are you teaching these new drivers when you tailgate because we are not going the speed limit (by the way, that is put in place for ideal driving conditions, not winter driving conditions) or because we wait at a stop sign a minute too long because my son wants to be sure it’s OK to go.

Then there’s the lady in the red car speeding past us on a busy residential street to get somewhere 10 seconds quicker. Not to mention the people who shake their heads rudely as we are passed.

I am trying to teach my son good driving skills, to feel confident behind the wheel. Maybe you could help also, so next time you see a yellow L on the back of a vehicle, how about a bit more patience and understanding? And if you don’t have it maybe you should not be driving on the road.
