The recent statement by Yukon’s Department of Energy, Mines and Resources that Yukon’s Liard Basin is a “world class” shale gas deposit is as ignorant as it is arrogant.

Their own report (Scoping Study of Unconventional Oil and Gas Potential, Yukon) concluded that Liard Basin has only good shale gas potential. Apparently, Energy, Mines and Resources Minister Scott Kent does not require his own department to follow his warning about zero-tolerance for misinformation.

Promoting this area as world-class is nothing more than Yukon Party propaganda, or as outlined in the now-infamous leaked email by Assistant Deputy Minister Shirley Abercrombie, “an information campaign” to “target First Nations, the general public and stakeholders.”

Perhaps the Yukon Party government will also want to change the tourism slogan from “Yukon - Larger than Life” (which, ironically, was “borrowed” from Texas, a state known for its “world-class” shale gas deposits) to “Yukon - Where Good is World-Class.”
