I had the opportunity to attend to the city of Whitehorse open house on Porter Creek D/McIntyre Creek last Thursday. The event was well attended, and I watched residents voice their concerns and engage in dialogue with various city planning officials, Mayor Bev Buckway and Coun. Betty Irwin.

As a candidate running for the council vacancy, I was interested in hearing what residents had to say, and being involved in some of the discussions. However, I was very disappointed in some of the comments that had made their way onto the city’s displays.

I saw post-its that had written on them “This is garbage!”, “The city is a JOKE,” and “What nonsense,” among others. Residents need to understand that these types of comments are not productive. Whether you agree or disagree with the Porter Creek D/McIntyre Creek development plans, you need to voice your opinion in a constructive manner.

City planners take all those comments back to their offices and review them, to see if there’s anything they can incorporate, or if there’s anything they may not have thought of. This is the entire point of community consultation. Writing down “The city is a JOKE,” gives city planners nothing constructive to use, and also wastes their time, which is ultimately wasting our taxpayer money.
