If nothing else, you have to give Dave Stockdale full credit for being tactless.

And insincere.

At the beginning of February, Stockdale issued an apology after being verbally abusive to citizens voicing concerns about a controversial McLean Lake industrial quarry zoning application.

“In my position, I should never let frustration get in the way of good manners and respect for the concerns of others, and I will not let that happen again as long as I am on council,” wrote Stockdale in a letter published on February 2.

This week, the McLean Lake zoning issue wrapped up. Council dismissed vehement public opposition and unanimously supported the quarry application from Territorial Contracting Ltd. for a McLean Lake site.

Each politician explained why they were supporting the quarry.

And then came Stockdale: “I may be proved wrong, but I won’t be alive to see it and if it’s my legacy, well, too bad.”

Aside from undermining his pledge to respect the concerns of others, it raises questions about his responsibility for the city’s future.

Coming from Stockdale, the remark is particularly disappointing.

The people have placed their trust in him far more than any other elected official.

He’s logged more than 23 years on council.

In fickle Yukon, that’s an outstanding achievement.

And now, in the gloaming of his political career, we catch sight of his contempt for both the citizens and the city.

How sad. (RM)
