Once again, the Yukon News has received several nominations for the BC-Yukon Community Newspaper Association’s Ma Murray Awards.
Genesee Keevil has been nominated for an investigative journalism award on the strength of her series Jailed Without A Cause, which examined the disturbing case of Veronica
Germaine, who remained in the Yukon’s correctional centre even though her charges had been dropped.
Keevil has also been nominated for her arts and culture writing for her piece on Mike Stevens, a bluegrass artist who has dedicated a chunk of his life to helping gas-sniffing kids in the Innu community of Sheshathui.
And John Thompson has been nominated under the environmental writing category for his work on the collapse of the Southern Lakes moose population.
Chris Colbourne has received a nod for his incredible photo essay Nation of Mutilation, which chronicled mine victims in Cambodia. The News is the only paper in North America to have published this compelling photo story.
And Colbourne has also been nominated for sports photography, sharing the category with Ian Stewart. No other paper was nominated for two photography awards in a single category.
Finally, Mike Thomas has once again been nominated in the feature photo award category.
