Whitehorse hosts Subzero Volleyball's "Serves You Right" tournament

Tournament takes place at gyms across Whitehorse

Subzero Volleyball’s "Serves You Right" tournament, held Feb. 7 to 9 at gyms across Whitehorse, came with its share of sets, spikes and surprises.

The 13/14 and under jamboree tournament had eight teams involved, all named for sweet treats from the freezer. 

Pool A standings after the round robin were: Ben & Jerries, Popsicles, Fudgsicles and then Dilly Bars. 

The Pool B standings were: Blizzards, Ice Caps, Frosties and then Freezies.

4th place in both pools played a consolation final that the Freezies won.

In the first round of playoffs Ice Caps beat Fudgesicles for a chance to take on pool A winners Ben & Jerries. 

Popsicles beat Frosties in round 1 and then beat the pool B leading Blizzards in the next round before winning the jamboree in the finals against Ben & Jerries. 

In the 14 and under boys/15 and under girls tournament the round robin left the standings with the 14U boys Iced in first, followed by the 15U girls Blizzard then the 15U girls Avalanche and the 14U boys Flying Yetis. 

The Iced would beat the Yetis in the first round setting up a second-round match with the Blizzard who beat the Avalanche in the first playoff round. The Blizzard went on to take first place in that match and the Avalanche won the third-place game. 

15 and under boys teams were in a tournament with 16 and under boys. Standings coming out of the Round Robin were 15U boys Blitzen in first followed by 15U boys Vixen, 15U boys Rudolph and 16U boys Team 2. 

Team Blitzen beat Team 2 and Vixen beat Rudolph in in the first round with Vixen coming out in first place. Team Rudolph won the game for third place. 

The tournament for 16U to 18U girls teams ended in a surprise after the Subzero 18U girls team that picked up first spot in the round robin was beaten in the final by the Subzero 16U girls Storm. Rounding out the standings in the five-team tournament were the Heat 17U girls, the Heat 18U girls and the Subzero 16U girls Whiteout. 

16 to 18U boys teams also competed in a tournament won by Subzero ice spike 18U boys who had won Pool A in the round robin. Second place went to Seb’s Team followed by 16U boys Team 1 followed by 17/18U boys team and then Chan’s Team and Frank’s Team.
