It was much more fun than a botched diamond heist.
At least, that seemed to be the general feeling following the 2012 Reservoir Dogs Tournament that wrapped up Saturday at Better Bodies Whitehorse.
Inspired by the 1992 Quentin Tarantino film, six teams of squash players called Mr. Blue, Mr. Orange, Mr. Pink and so on, went head to head to win as many points as they could over five timed segments.
In the end, Mr. White took first, accumulating 2,227 points for and 1,990 against.
It’s the most enjoyable tournament of the season, said Mr. White’s No. 1 player, Cameron Grandy.
“It was a blast; it was a lot of fun,” said Grandy. “We were all here watching and cheering each other on. That’s the fun part about this tournament: you come and watch everybody play.”
“I think it’s safe to say it’s considered to be the most fun tournament of the year,” said Mr. White’s No. 3 Jim Gilpin.
Mr. White also included Lorne Harris, Chris Ziegler, Danny Yurick, Kyle Rolling and Marie Maratos.
Each team had seven players ranked one through seven. When teams competed, players were matched up based on their rankings, so No. 1s played each other, No. 7s played each other, and everything in between.
It wasn’t about winning games or matches, it was about winning as many points as possible in the 25-minute periods.
“Every single point you make for your team goes towards the win or the loss,” said Grandy.
“It is the most fun, but it’s also the hardest on the body.”
As an added bit of fun, six plastic cups were placed along the walls of the courts. Players would receive an extra six points for every shot that hit a cup.
“Danny Yurick got a lot of points, Jim got a lot of points, our No. 2, Lorne got all kinds of points,” said Grandy. “Actually, we all did well.
“Marie Maratos she has a wicked serve and got a lot of cups. I think she was tied for most cups in her division.”
The Mr. Black team of Mark Tubman, Chris Toleman, Michel Gelinas, Jodi Tuton, Taylor Love, Micah Smith and Cathy MacDonald, finished in second place with 2,141 points for and 1,987 against.
The Mr. Blue team - Blaine Tessier, Lori Muir, Stephen Buckler, Matt Brown, Kealan Campbell, Matt Johnson and Gareth Earl - place third with 2,046 points for and 2,013 against.
