River Trail Marathon accepting late entries

Most people will spend weeks, if not months, preparing for a marathon. But if you’re more the type to “wing it,” the Yukon River Trail Marathon is accepting late entries up to Saturday afternoon.

“The on-line (registry) has closed, but you can go to SportLife on Friday night, or from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday and sign up,” said event organizer Keith Thaxter. “At this point we still have a lot of the shirts that we give to the runners—we have a beautiful red and charcoal shirt we developed with the logo and all the sponsors on the back, which is part of the package for registering.”

The marathon will take place Sunday, beginning and ending in Rotary Park in downtown Whitehorse. Those running the full marathon will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by relay teams at 9:30 and half-marathon runners at 10. An awards ceremony will take place at 2:30 p.m. near the finish line. There will also be a barbecue hosted by the Canadian ski patrol from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.

So far 238 runners have registered for the race, with 36 running in the full marathon. More information can be found at www.yukonmarathon.com. (Tom Patrick)
