Thirteen racers took to the streets in downtown Whitehorse Monday for the Discovery Day Criterium Race.

A criterium is held on a short course and lasts for a pre-determined length of time. Monday’s race lasted one hour, followed by an additional five laps.

The first finisher at the end of those five laps (provided he or she had not been lapped) was the winner of the race.

During the race there were also “prime” laps in which riders could win prizes.

The pace was high from the outset and the field was soon whittled down to five frontrunners.

Throughout the race, the five fought it out for the prime laps. The eventual race winner was Ross Phillips. It was his first race since recovering from a broken leg.

In the women’s division, Allison Furniss and Heather Enders were locked in a close duel for the entire race.

In the end, Furniss had the stronger legs and managed to outsprint Enders.
