Numbers up at Dash for Cash championships

Few riders went thirsty at the Pepsi Cola Dash for Cash at the Yukon Horse and Rider Association Show Grounds on Saturday.

Few riders went thirsty at the Pepsi Cola Dash for Cash at the Yukon Horse and Rider Association Show Grounds on Saturday.

In the gymkhana event, which awards winners with cans of pop, about 25 teams competed, up from 18 at last year’s championship.

“We were hoping to get a little more attention and the riders are getting better every year,” said director Angelique Bjork. “It’s great to see them coming out and getting more comfortable doing these things.

“There were definitely some new horses and little kids trying it out.”

Adding to the excitement was the expansion of the Dash for Cash into a three-part series, with Saturday’s event deciding which riders would take in the coveted champion horse blankets.

Not only did Bjork win the senior division with her horse Skye, she was also the reserve winner with her horse Sonny.

With points accumulated from all three events over the summer, Whitehorse’s Malorie Hansen, 11, won the junior division with horse Lady.

“I was excited,” said Hansen. “I was really impressed with Lady, how she did. She usually doesn’t respond as well as she did today.”

Hansen, who has been riding for two years, won the flag race and the keyhole event.

“I really like the keyhole because, I guess, I’m good at it,” said Hansen.

Riding in two Dash for Cashes was enough for Brayden Bjork, 9, to win the peewee division with horse Kelsie.

“I’m good at poll bending and barrels,” said Brayden. “I was proud quite a bit because today was the day I started galloping.”
