By the Whitehorse Cross Country Ski Club

Cold weather skiing on marginal snow is not a great combination. For those who want to ski anyway, dress warmly and try skiing the McIntyre Loop or Jackson Lake.

The McIntyre Loop is still very good for classic and Jackson Lake has a good, skied-in track around the whole shoreline.

Most of the trails are skiable. Skiing is not recommended on Powerline and World Cup 10K through the Raven’s Ridge detour. Use caution on all hills — if in doubt walk down. Rock skis are recommended.

Grip wax for today is Rex or Rode Special Green. Apply several layers and cork smooth.

Trail lights are on until 9:30 p.m. on the Copper/Lynx/Dog loop and in the ski stadium. The World Cup 5K lights are turned on Tuesday and Thursday for ski training.

Lights will be turned off if the temperature is -30 or colder.

If skiing the McIntyre Loop, it is recommended to walk or ski up the Ascent or Descent Trail. If driving up the Descent Trail, good winter tires and four-wheel drive are essential. Use caution and be prepared to meet oncoming traffic. The road is one lane most of the way.

The World Cup 10K has been rerouted around the Raven’s Ridge subdivision. Until conditions improve it is best to detour at the Moose Hill connector to Pierre Harvey Trail There are signs to guide skiers onto the detour.

Memberships or day passes are required to use the club trails.
