The Whitehorse Glacier Bears recently travelled to Vancouver for the end of season AA Provincial Championships at the Percy Norman Pool on June 23 to 25.
Despite being one of the smallest teams at the swim meet, the Bears were often the loudest cheering team. People definitely knew where the Bears are from.
Kate McArthur led the way for the Bears, medalling in all five of her swims. Competing in the 12-year-old division, McArthur did an incredible job in each final, achieving personal best times.
The highlight for McArthur was achieving the AAA qualifying time in the 100-metre backstroke event, and also taking the gold.
Distance events saw two competitors in each lane, for most this was a new experience with some challenges.
Jason Zrum was seeded as a medal contender in the 400-metre freestyle. Unfortunately the other swimmer in his lane swam right into Zrum just after he had completed a turn, colliding headfirst.
“It was great that Jason completed the swim, and finished in 4th place,” said coach Kathy Zrum.
Jason Zrum and Aurora Cherian-Kuni both tackled the tough and very tiring, 400-metre individual medley race.
Aurora swam a very strong fly portion of the race and, at the end, said she was glad it was over and that she had survived the challenging race.
Both Aurora and Jason achieved personal bests in this event, along with knocking off a large amount of time.
In total, nine medals were brought back from the swim meet from three swimmers:
• Kate McArthur (gold in 100-metre backstroke and 100-metre breaststroke, silver in 50-metre freestyle, 200-metre individual medley, 100-metre freestyle)
• Hayley Bielz (gold in 800-metre freestyle, silver in 400-metre freestyle)
• Jason Zrum (bronze 400-metre individual medley and 100-metre freestyle)
Other notable performances include Aurora Cherian-Kuni, who made the final in the 100-metre fly, and finished the race in 5th place, and achieved a AA qualifying time.
Spencer Sumanik, swimming in the tough 14 and older age division, had a fantastic 200-metre freestyle swim, achieving another personal best, he also swam a very fast 100-metre fly, achieving an AA qualifying time in this event.
Next up for the Whitehorse Glacier Bears, the SilverTip swimmers travel to Victoria for the BC AAA Provincial Long Course Championships in Victoria on July 6 to 9, 2006.
