Lawyer crew grabs shutout for U 12 title

After 55 minutes of scoreless play, Austring, Fendrick, Fairman & Parkkari looked to have the soccer equivalent of a hung jury on their hands. However, with late game goals from Aimee Parker and Logan Harris – his seventh of the tournament – the lawyer crew took a 2-0 win over Property Guys.

After 55 minutes of scoreless play, Austring, Fendrick, Fairman & Parkkari looked to have the soccer equivalent of a hung jury on their hands.

However, with late game goals from Aimee Parker and Logan Harris – his seventh of the tournament – the lawyer crew took a 2-0 win over Property Guys in the U-12 final of the 2010 Yukon Outdoor Soccer Championships at the FH Collins Secondary fields on Sunday.

“It was a fantastic game,” said Austring coach Derek Parker. “It was a nail-biter all the way through. The kids were playing their position – the defence was there when they needed to be. It was hard for us to punch the ball through, it was hard for them to punch the ball through. It was a really close game.

“I can’t name a MVP; there’s seven or eight people I’d have to put in there.”

Although shutout in the finals, Property Guys advanced through the semifinal with a close 4-3 win over the Lamarche Pearson team, coming back from 3-1 in the second half. Scoring the Property Guys were Mackenzie Shaw, Mikaela Ponsioen and Quinn Peirce with two.

“No one stood out more than anyone else,” said Property Guys coach Pat Shaw. “It was a huge team effort. If we name one player then we’re missing out on 11 others.”

In the contest for bronze, Lamarche Pearson took a 4-1 win over Dirkbuilt with a pair goals each coming from Sean Clarke and Spencer Lassard. Lamarche took the bronze despite having only eight players at the tournament.

“When you’re playing with eight players, it really is a team effort,” said Lamarche coach Sean McLeish. “They really persevered. It was a lot of wear and tear on the legs.

“They scored first, so it was tense for a while for us. Then we got our momentum together and came back in the game.”

Jacob’s Industries grounds Eagle Construction

While Lamarche Pearson took the U-12 bronze with just eight players, Jacob’s Industries did one better.

Jacob’s – nicknamed the Magnificent Seven at the tournament – took gold in the U-13 with just seven players, defeating Eagle Construction 6-2 in the finals.

“We’ve been low (on players) all weekend, so the other teams had to do the fair play rule, putting out as many players as we have,” said Jacob’s coach Charlene Torgerson. “I had nothing to do with making up that rule, but I sure appreciate it because we never would have made it this far without it.

“I think everyone will sleep well tonight.”

Getting goals for Jacob’s were Pierre Lefebvre with one, Chris Torgerson with two – scoring 17 in the tournament – and Samantha Wintemute with a hat trick, all on breakaways.

“Samantha is solid where ever we put her – except in net, she won’t play net,” said Torgerson. “She will do whatever you ask of her and she’ll leave it on the field every time.

“Timber (Scroff), in net, was stellar,” she added. “He made this tournament. If it wasn’t for him it wouldn’t have happened.”

Putting the ball in the net for Eagle were Alex Hanson and Janelle Cousins.

“They beat us to the ball,” said Eagle coach Ken Vickerman. “We had two girls (Chloe Turner-Davis and Lorne Leslie) that played defence for us who were really outstanding all weekend; they were the most solid players all weekend.

“And Alex Hanson also played some tremendous games – some of the best games he played all year.”

Taking the U-13 bronze was Henry Gulch Exploration, shutting out Better Bodies 6-0, with goals from Sam Lee, Benjamin Grundmanis, Hanna Milner and a hat trick from Tristan Sparks.

“We had a really solid team,” said Henry Gulch coach John Pereira. “We had five or six players from the start of the year that really showed a lot of improvement.”

U-15 bronze game decided in shootout

Twice erasing one-goal deficits, Woodhouse Business Consulting took bronze in the U-15 division with a 4-3, shootout win over The Deli.

Scoring for Woodhouse were Tanner Borsa, Mike Wintemute and Riley Andrew – Borsa, who played in net, scored the game winner in the shootout.

“They all actually played instead of just gossiped on the field,” said Woodhouse coach Gwen McIntyre. “They’re a good team and they always showed up – that was one good thing about them. They all showed up and they all enjoyed it.”

Putting The Deli on the board were Megan Lanigan and Andrew Scoffin with two.

The U-15 gold medal game was basically non-existent with Sportslife taking silver after failing to produce enough players for the final. Taking gold through forfeit was RPAY.

“We were short all weekend – we only had seven players,” said Sportslife coach Brett Hills. “Today one of our kids lost his shoes and was late and could not play, so we forfeited our game.”

To get to the final RPAY took a 5-4 win over Woodhouse with goals from Elliot Berg, Cole Morris, Samantha Burgis and a pair from Logan Fraser.

“They’re really happy they came out with gold because all season they were kind of a mediocre team,” said RPAY coach John Berg. “Suddenly they came through in the tournament and actually played with some energy and enthusiasm.”
