In their third meeting of the season, the Deli earned a second win over Boston Pizza Monday at FH Collins soccer field.

The 3-1 win comes as the 12-and-under league approaches the final week of regular season games.

The Deli’s only loss thus far came at the hands of Boston Pizza early in the season.

Coming out strong, the Deli finished the first half up 2-0, with Aiden Allen and Jono Runions each finding the back of the net. Allen’s goal came just minutes into the game.

However, Boston Pizza picked things up, getting scoring chances in the dying minutes of the first half.

Boston then carried its growing momentum into the second, scoring a goal early on.

With a lot of legwork, fighting for possession all over the field, the Deli’s Andrew Scoffin pushed his team’s lead back to two with a goal late in the second half.

Scoffin’s goal came just minutes after a fudged scoring attempt, putting a shot wide on a golden opportunity.

“I just got it off the wrong side of my foot,” said Scoffin, 12, referring to his missed opportunity. “And I kicked it too far for me and I thought he (Boston Pizza’s goalkeeper) was going to get it.

“I had more control of the ball so I just flicked it up,” added Scoffin, speaking of his goal.

The Deli’s MVP was Kasey Fernandes.

“He was applying himself more than previous games,” said Deli’s coach Wade Scoffin of Fernandez. “So he’s improving, and that’s the thing we’re wanting to help with all the kids: get a little stronger all the time.”

Boston Pizza has a chance to even the score in its final regular season game, facing the Deli Wednesday, June 25 at Vanier.
