The Ridge Pub team - formally known as Tlingit Electric - now has a sponsor to serve consolation drinks after losses.

Last year’s closing tournament champions began the season with a 13-12 loss to the Whitehorse Dental Donkeys in Division 1 of the Whitehorse Co-Ed Slo-Pitch League on Monday at the Pepsi Softball Centre.

Ridge Pub jumped out to a 6-1 lead by middle of the third inning on a line drive to left field by Blaine (Bubba) Demchuk, scoring runners from third and second.

However, the Donkeys evened the score on a blooper from Rob Johnson to end the inning 6-6.

“Well, that’s slo-pitch,” said Ridge centrefielder Rob Fordham. “We made a couple errors in the field; they hit the ball well at the end and they took the game.”

The Donkeys took their first lead of the game in the fifth with Craig Claggett putting the ball off the left field wall to score Mike Gau and go up 12-11.

Evened up 12-12 at the top of the sixth on an RBI by Ridge’s Kevin Chowan, the Donkeys took the win in the bottom of the inning on a hit up the middle by Jodie Johnson to score a runner.

“We have a few new people - we’re always turning people over,” said Fordham. “We probably have three or four new players.”
