A total of 34 squash players took part in the Christmas Squash Tournament organized by Squash Yukon.
The competition was held in Whitehorse on Dec. 15 and 16. Squash Yukon organizes a monthly squash tournament from the beginning of the season in September.
There were six categories at the Christmas tournament, including men’s open, mixed A, B, C and D and the new champs. Players were divided according to skill level.
In the men’s open, Squash Yukon coach Gyanendra Singh, Jeff Muirhead and Peter Mather won first, second and third positions, respectively.
In the mixed A category, Jeremy Kovac, Kamran Idrees and Coleman Newell won top spots, while in the mixed B division Nikhil Sharma, Gurmaan Rai and Jason Pedlar claimed the top three spots.
The mixed C category had Chris Sutton, Muhammad Idrees and James McCullough as winners. Lynn Williams, Keely Kovac and Waylon Johnson won the mixed D event.
In the new champs division category for ages six to nine, Remi Kulachkosky, Will Powell and Samson Moses took the top three spots.
Singh said it was a fairly competitive tournament and that all players had a great time.
“People were really generous in donating to the food bank and we got around $400 cash. They were happy to donate and help the community.”
Before the tournament, participants were asked to bring food items equivalent to the standard registration fee of $40 to $60 for the competition. The food items will be donated to the Whitehorse Food Bank.
Singh said after the Christmas break Squash Yukon will be completing the Round 2 of its league. The league has seven teams each in two divisions, with league play happening from November until April.
The next official tournament will be the Frosty Nicks event on Jan. 19 and 20, 2024.
