SALMON KINGS: Gajic hits record books in Salmon Kings win

Play it down all they want, the Victoria Salmon Kings came out a determined bunch against the Alaska Aces at Save-on-Foods Memorial Centre on Wednesday night.

Both the Salmon Kings players and coaching staff wrote off any hype around the return of former captain Wes Goldie.

The Salmon Kings topped Alaska 6-3. It was 3-1 after two for Victoria, with five goals coming in the third period.

Going into the game Goldie only needed one goal move into a tie with Sheldon Gorski for fifth all time in ECHL goals scored with 316.

Instead, it was Milan Gajic who scored his 99th and 100th goals of his ECHL career.

Gajic (12) and Jeff Caister (5) each scored twice, with Rick Cleaver (16) and Ryan Dingle (3) adding singles.

Goalie David Shantz won his 15th game of the year.

Former Victoria Grizzlies and Vancouver Giants forward Gary Nunn was held pointless in his pro debut here in Victoria. Nunn did have a breakaway in the second period but slid the puck wide of the net. Goldie, meahwhile, was kept to one assist.

The Salmon Kings host the Aces for two more at SOFMC, Friday and Saturday nights at 7:05 p.m.

Chad Painchaud skated with the team today (Feb. 3), his first time since Jan. 22 in Alaska.

Last year’s leading scorer is second in goals (14) behind Matt Siddall’s 18.
