I always find Keith Halliday’s columns interesting and informative, and no more so than his column on the Dempster.
Last summer, a friend and I drove to Tuk. It was a remarkable trip, one of the best trips I have taken and I have been privileged to travel widely inside and outside the Yukon. I read some of the comments previous drivers had made with suggestions such as taping all the doors and windows to keep out dust... We did not.
Yes, there were potholes and rough road conditions, but that was part of the adventure. We rarely drove above 60 kilometres an hour and had no flat tires, windshield cracks or other mishaps. We were also fortunate with weather and missed forest fires and other natural disasters. I must say the astounding scenery, the welcome at Tuk in a great B and B were unmatched.
I admit that we were somewhat smug as we saw those folks who had whizzed by us with trailers and big SUVs which we later saw sadly looking at their punctured tires. Of course, we offered help.
This was a great adventure and in my own country, people who want to go into the wilderness and expect a wine list, cappuccino and paved roads are on the wrong trip.
Loved your comments, Keith!
